This has been our second time visiting San Diego and we have loved both of our times here! Our weekend in San Diego looked a little different on our second visit with our camper and two cats but it didn’t feel like it was holding us back from exploring the city.
Although you could easily spend a week here and not run out of things to do, we still found that a weekend was enough time to see a good chunk of San Diego. If you can make it a long weekend, even better. :)
For those interested in staying in their RV or camper while in San Diego, we can recommend San Diego KOA .
Busy campground but it has all the amenities with clean bathrooms and showers, laundromat, and even a heated pool and restaurant.
We were visiting over Christmas so it was busy with a lot of families but we didn’t mind since we were planning to be out exploring for most of our days here. It is also one of the closest campgrounds to downtown so that is why we went with it.
If you have a long weekend here, we highly recommend checking out the San Diego Zoo . It requires a full day so last time we visited we didn’t have enough time to squeeze a visit in but we did this time!
We went on a rainy Christmas day and it was such a fun way to spend our day. Busier than expected, it wasn’t overflowing with people and we were able to be awed by the cool animals that inhabit this earth before making our way back home to our two kitties in the camper.
Another fun stop is Hotel Coronado . You don’t have to stay at this iconic hotel to enjoy its amenities. During the holidays, they had Christmas decor up, an ice skating rink, and outdoor bars and food stands for all to enjoy. Plus, did I mention it's right on the beach?!
Making our way into downtown San Diego, we explored Gaslamp Quarter where we struggled to find an open restaurant (the main con to visiting Christmas weekend) but eventually found a nice outdoor restaurant on one of the main streets.
From there we wandered to Seaport Village which is a picturesque spot right by the harbor where you can find families flying kites, tourists on scooters, and cute coffee shops.
Old Town is supposed to be a fun place to wander around that we haven’t had a chance to check out yet! Also, Balboa Park , where the zoo is located, is another place you can easily spend the whole day at.
So there you have it. For a quick weekend getaway to San Diego, be sure to check out the downtown area, Old Town, Hotel Coronado, Balboa Park, and if you have time to add an extra day, go check out the zoo as well!
I am sure we missed a lot of great spots to check out. If you have been before, what was something you enjoyed in San Diego?
You can check out our video to San Diego where we also make stops in Malibu and Morro Bay beforehand.
